Belgien ohne Chance!

Es spielten: Shey Peddy (22 Punkte), Claudia Calvelo (6), Daniela Vogel (2), Stephanie Wagner (3), Anna Jurcenkova (6), Tiina Sten (9), Sara Vujacic, Svenja Brunckhorst (15), Nicole Romeo (11), Emma Cannon (14).

EUROLEAGUE WOMEN
Regular Season Week 2 Review

SERVING UP A SLICE OF HISTORY
You have to love teams making history and first wins in any competition are always a great moment for coaches, fans, players and any club generally. After a close-call on their debut last week in Russia against Orenburg, there was joy for Energa Torun who fought off a very powerful and talented Agu Spor Kulubu to create a slice of history with their maiden EuroLeague Women success.

It was made all the more impressive because some cynics suggested they would struggle to win a single game and they have come within a whisker of starting 2-0. I admit I went on record as saying they would probably struggle (and they still might over the course of the season) but this has been a very competitive and productive introduction to the elite level.

Borrowing Tijana Ajdukovic from Sparta&K M.R. Vidnoje looks to have been a masterstroke and her fine double-double was the driving factor in the win. Or was it?

For me, you have to look at the quick hands and and reading of the game by Jamaican star Maurita Reid.

Having grabbed nine steals against Orenburg, she snapped up another seven steals this time out and that is simply outstanding, especially as she was somewhat below par offensively and sometimes when leading players are not scoring as they should, their whole game goes down and with it, their team's display too. But, she set the tone at the other end of the court and really showed leadership with her defensive work.

Getting this first and very important victory will breed confidence for Elmedin Omanic and his players.

However, it is a double-edged sword in the sense that extra confidence is balanced out by the ‘surprise factor' being diluted and fading as their opponents wise-up and study more and more game tapes.

As the rigours of a long and gruelling EuroLeague Women season kicks in during the winter months, we will see the true measure of Energa Torun.

Nevertheless, despite this warning, I feel hearty and warm congratulations are due to them and I hope everyone enjoyed their triumph and reaching such an important and momentous landmark.

SLIDING ONTO THE RADAR

It is tough for any young player to come into EuroLeague Women at the best of times, but particularly challenging stepping out for a BK Imos Brno team which is short-handed and struggling. However, all credit to 17-year-old Czech prospect Lenka Soukalova who made her debut in the competition with eight minutes of court time. She also sunk a couple of free-throws for good measure.

It's never too late to slide onto the radar as proven by 32-year-old Polish wing Agnieszka Makowska. Like her team Torun, this is also her first season in the tournament and having played only 3 minutes last week, she was handed 14 minutes this time around and delivered with a fine cameo. She scored a perfect 11 points in 14 minutes - not missing a shot all night. In fact, in such a tight game, there is a credible argument it was equally and if not more important than the above contributions from Ajdukovic and Reid.

NUMBER CRUNCHING

Valeriane Ayayi followed up her 30-point debut display last week for BLMA with an excellent 8-of-12 18-point effort against UMMC . She is the leading floor-shooter with 66.7% so far.

Another rising star in Zofia Hruscakova of Good Angels Kosice has now shot 75% in both games and leads the competition in finishing around the hoop.

Wisla Can-Pack produced the best shooting night of the season so far with 57.9% in their win this week against Dynamo Kursk.

Tango Bourges Basket were the first team to reach double-digits as a team in blocked shots, with 10 of them against Beretta Famila Schio.

PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK
There were four main contenders this week with last week's winners Alberto Miranda and CB Avenida making another statement with a brilliant defensive effort to hold Nadezhda to 50 points.

The comeback queens of Good Angels Kosice provided the biggest excitement of the round by snatching victory from the jaws of defeat against Galatasaray in Istanbul.

From an individual perspective, Nnemkadi Ogwumike was sensational (albeit in defeat) for Kusk with that mammoth double-double.

However, there's nothing like getting your first EuroLeague Women success and as it was particularly hard-fought against a tough Agu Spor team, I am giving my performance of the week to Energa Torun.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"I think Nadezhda doesn't need foreign players or coach to score only 50 points. We have a lot of things to fix and we will think about it on our long travel back." Nadezhda Orenburg Region, head coach George Dikeoulakos makes it two-of-two after also featuring last week with his pearls of wisdom.

Wisla Can-Pack - Dynamo Kursk 77:62
BLMA - UMMC Ekaterinburg 58:74
Galatasaray - Good Angels Kosice 67:68
BK IMOS Brno - Fenerbahce 52:85
Energa Torun - AgĂŒ Spor 83:78
Bourges Basket - Beretta Famila 79:67
CB Avenida - Nadezhda 61:50
