Wegen eines falschen Reisepasses ist der zentralafrikanische Basketball-Profi Romain Sato von Fenerbahce Istanbul an der slowenischen Grenze festgenommen worden.
Der 31-Jährige wurde über Nacht festgehalten, weil die Kontrolleure die Seite mit biografischen Angaben für gefälscht hielten. «Das wurde später mit der entsprechenden technischen Ausrüstung bestätigt», teilte die slowenische Polizei mit.
Fenerbahce bezeichnete die Ausweisung als «ungerechtfertigt». Der türkische Club sollte am Freitagabend zum Euroleague-Spiel bei Union Olimpija in Ljubljana antreten. Sato war diesen Sommer von Panathinaikos Athen zu Istanbul gewechselt, vor acht Jahren war er von den San Antonio Spurs in der NBA-Draft ausgewählt worden. In der besten Liga der Welt kam der Shooting Guard aber nicht zum Zug.
Khimki upset Real Madrid in Euroleague
Khimki have got their first win in basketball's Euroleague hanging on for a narrow 86-85 win over Real Madrid in Russia.
The Moscow Region side had lost their opening game in Group A, but made up for it with an improbable win against Real in front of their home fans in Khimki just outside Moscow.
The Russians were looking comfortable in the third period and at one stage were 18 points ahead.
However, Real made a 16-point run in the final frame, and just came up short in the final seconds when Rudy Fernandez missed a floater.
“I’m glad that we’ve won this game. I think that our team has great reserves,” Khimki’s Croatian center Kresimir Loncar said after the game. “I think we’ll have a good season. The most important is that everybody stays healthy.”
Fenerbahce top Group A at the moment after they beat Union Olympia for their second win from two games.
Controversy overshadowed the meeting Ljubljana. Fenerbahce shooting guard Romain Sato was detained overnight Thursday by Slovenian police on charges of trying to enter the country with a fake passport. The Central African Republic player was released on Friday and sent home.
Zalgaris lead Group C after getting the better of Caja Laboral. Armani also have a hundred per cent record, while Anadolu got their first win in that group against Olympiakos.
